Projects...

I have had a couple of fun projects that I attempted this month. Tell me how you think they turned out...

First, I took these pink crib bumber pads purchased at a yard sale for $2...

Then I purchased the fabric of Amanda's choice for about $12 (gotta love Joann's 50% off coupons!)

It was hard fabric to work with, and as with all my sewing projects, if you don't look CLOSELY, they turned out pretty good.

Hope my new grandson will be comfy in his blue and brown crib! Bumper pads that look almost identical to this in the store were $30. Even with shipping we are ahead and it was fun to do!
And then...

My other project was this LARGE Sequence board for one of Dave's favorite games. My friend Ann and I each made one for our husbands for Father's day. It was a fun project and Dave was happy to get it! We all played a few rounds with him on Father's day. And guess what, all us old people can see the board clearly! Now when we play games with Ann and Dan, whichever house we're at, there is a large board! Thanks to the Martinez family for the idea!!

Faith...

I was asked to teach our RS "personal progress" class on Faith this week. I was nervous about doing it, but it was good for me to study this topic. I am grateful to the ladies who attended the class and for their thoughts, input and participation. I was the most enlightened when I read the definition of Faith in the bible dictionary. I also enyoyed reading the various scriptures and the Proclamation on the family. I will enjoy continuing to study and work on this value along with my sisters in Relief Society. My two favorite quotes on Faith this week are these:

"When you come to the end of all the light you know, and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown, FAITH is knowing that one of two things shall happen: Either you will be given something solid to stand on or you will be taught to fly." Edward Teller

I will try to do as Pres. Hinckley has advised, GO FORWARD AS IF EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT...in other words, go forth in FAITH!

Three times the blessings...

Three days a week and sometimes four, I have the honor of going over and helping with feeding these beautiful babies! They are three blessings from heaven and I LOVE the time I get to spend with them. One day Clif and Maddy came to help too. (Maddy helps over there a LOT). It's always fun to feed babies and visit with who ever happens to be there helping at that time. I have really enjoyed getting to know their maternal Grandma and it is just such a pleasure to be there helping. These three help me get to be a grandma while my grandbaby is far away. Thank you so much Lyla, Scarlet and Porter, for letting me be a part of your lives. You are three special and loved babies and are blessing many people!!

A Pleasant surprise...

Our monthly evening book club was this week. The past few months attendance has been, shall we say, pretty down. Even with all the reminders, people still have reasons they can't come...but everyone WANTED to come. It just doesn't happen. Stefanie was so gracious to open up her home to us, and when I got there it was just going to be me and her. I was so disappointed. I asked her if I should just give up and stop trying to have book club. We thought about it as we began to fix plates with her YUMMY desserts and strawberry lemonade. We sat down and started discussing the book, "Eve and the choice made in Eden" and THEN...the doorbell rang...and Christi came in. YAY! Then Peggy came, and last but not least, Caleen came! There were 5 of us! It cheered my heart. We had a wonderful discussion about Eve and the book (even those who hadn't read it, left with a copy and a desire to read it!) and truly enjoyed Stefanies treat. Her "leaf" die cuts sprinkled around the table were a perfect touch. Thanks Stef! And thank you to those of you who came and made it such an enjoyable evening of sisterhood! It was almost Eden!

Another pleasant surprise I had this week was another trip to Deseret Industries! While we were in Folsum this weekend, we stopped by just as they opened and went straight to the book racks. Oh how I love finding good bargains there! The LDS book section is first. I added to our Mark E. Petersen "prophet" books. only 1 dollar each! Even the 3 I bought that I already had (but couldn't remember) I am only out 3 dollars. And I can certainly give them away or donate them back! But as you can see, I also had some other fun finds. Some Christmas books (don't look too closely, some of you will be getting them for Christmas!) some classics and my FAVORITE find...The Secret Garden, large and illustrated and in perfect condition, book sleeve and all...you guessed it...one dollar! I love this book and have a small paper back copy, but this one is just beautiful and I was so excited to find it! Yes, I love going to DI. I also found 3 dresses and a khaki skirt...each only $4 and Joel found some shirts and several ties...he had fun too! I have got to figure out how to start a petition to get a DI here locally...in the meantime, I will be finding more reasons to go visit family in Folsom!

Memorial day...

My thoughts on Memorial Day automatically go to my Dad. He served in the US Army and he served well. We were the fortunate ones whose father came home from the wars. He was able to retire from the military. He had military honors at his funeral. My heart swells with gratitude when I think of his service, and the service of all the men and women who have served, many of whom gave their lives for our freedom. It is a sobering day, to remember and to give thanks. When you fly your flag today, remember them...as you enjoy our day off and festivities with your families and friends, remember them. Thank you Dad, for your sacrifices of home and family. We will never forget.

Happy Birthday Joel!

15 years ago our lives were blessed again for the 5th time. At 1:21 in the morning we had our biggest baby ever! 10 lbs. 6 oz and he was a beautiful baby! We waited a long time to get him in our family and he was worth the wait! Joel, you are a huge blessing in our lives and we are so grateful to have you in our family! You are strong and valiant, loving and kind, helpful and fun. You are a wonderful example of a Believer, a Scout, a friend, and a son. You honor your priesthood and are an asset to your priesthood quorum and your scout troop, as well as to our family. We cannot imagine our lives without you! Your old parents are glad to have you around a little longer, as all the rest of our kids leave the nest...we love you, we are grateful for you, and we wish you the happiest birthday today!! You are one cute boy! And if you get any taller you will have to become a professional basketball player! Congratulations on winning the scripture mastery last night too...that was so cool!! You are amazing - and you light up our lives!

I saw this quote on Lauren's facebook this morning and I HAD to capture it. I love that I can pray anytime, anywhere to my Heavenly Father. And believe me, I'm sure I weary Him some days with all my praying! But I am so grateful that the communication lines are ALWAYS open and He is ALWAYS there to hear me. I am grateful to parents who taught me this early in my life, knowing I would need it more as I became a wife and mother. I also appreciated Susan's blog this morning with the quote on PATIENCE. That one I still have to work on!! When life gets to hard to stand, kneel. That is my motto and this New Era Mormonad captured that for me...Don't forget to pray!

We attended a Court of Honor this month. Our fine young son received his LIFE award in scouting. It is always a pleasure to see these young men receive the awards they have so dutifully EARNED. I am grateful for the scouting program and all it does to enhance the lives of these young men. I especially love being pinned as the MOM of such fine young sons, although they have done all the work and I don't feel the need for any kind of recognition. I am simply behind the scenes cheering them on.

Birthday Bash in Elk Grove...

April 30th, Dave's sister Susan turned 60. We had a big bash in Elk Grove on Saturday, May 1st. Susan flew in from Idaho and as many McKinneys as possible drove up or over for the celebration. We appreciate John and April McKinney hosting the party and hosting us (we stayed in their lovely home). We were able to meet some long lost Kloss cousins (there whereabouts were unknown for over 50 years!) and it was just a wonderful day! The food was delicious, the company was enjoyable and the weather was perfect. Here are just a bunch of random pictures of our fun day. Happy Birthday Susan!

Wanted...local Deseret Industries

We just returned from a trip up to Elk Grove/Sacramento. We had a wonderful mini-reunion/60th birthday bash which I will blog about later. Knowing the party wasn't going to start until noontime, I asked Dave to drive me to the Sacramento DI so I could shop. He obliged and I had so much fun! Wish I'd have had more time to look at EVERYTHING. But I started with the books...bought 11 book! The most expensive one was $3, the cheapest was 50 cents! I also wanted a denim skirt, found one! $4. Then I got some ties for my boys, $3 each, some old fashioned canning jars, 25 cents and a wooden YW with all the values in balloons (she was a buck...worth it as a pattern anyway!) Needless to say I was THRILLED. I sure wish we could have a DI close by. It's like a huge yard sale all in one place! And NEATLY organized, reasonably priced, normal shopping hours (don't have to get up at the crack of dawn and drive all over kindgom come) just a whole lotta fun!! I got all of the above for $30. Maybe someday we will get a DI here, (I can dream!) but in the meantime, I think I will need to find a few more excuses to travel to Sacramento! Thanks honey for taking me there. (He picked out some of the books too!)
